Local Development Project

The BHA Local Development Project is funded by the Community Development Foundation and has the following aims:

  • to ensure that local authorities understand that they cannot discriminate between religious and non-religious beliefs
  • to ensure that all equality networks recognise the benefits of working with the whole of the ‘religion or belief’ equality strand, and not just with religious groups

  • to ensure that the relevant community forums and networks include people who can represent the interests of people with non-religious beliefs

Our Local Development Volunteer has established relationships with local councils, Inter Faith Networks, Colleges, West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, Sussex Partnership NHS, Community Service Volunteers and others.

He has contributed to local religion, belief and culture guides, participated in consultations and workshops, and attended West Sussex County Council's advisory body for Religious Education (SACRE) for 4 years, as an observer. He continues to campaign for Humanist representation on SACRE.

In 2010, he replaced Mid Sussex Freethinkers with West Sussex Humanists and aims to create an association of local groups that can meet regularly, address local issues and contribute to this website.
